Back in the 20th Century, the Mayfield family began ranching in Sonora, Texas and soon discovered that there was a large opening that lead to a fifty-foot drop and an even bigger cavern under their land. After local cavers had the chance to explore and discover some of the hidden passages with strange formations and beauty never before seen, the Caverns of Sonora was born.

With the vision to develop the caverns and preserve it for future generations, it was officially opened in July of 1960 and has been a very popular destination for cavers, thrill seekers, and explores alike.

When visitors come to the Caverns, they have the opportunity to see up close and personal what a living cave is all about. Take the Crystal Palace Tour and go 155 feet below the surface through two miles of decorated cave passages or take a customized group tour with your family and friends. Stop by the Underground Classroom and learn about geology, cave biology, and paleontology right where it all happens.
