Are you looking for an adventure this summer? Do you think you’re brave enough to handle diving deep underground? Are you ready for the Caverns of Sonora? Get ready to explore the mysteries and wonders that are hidden beneath the earth. Challenge yourself to conquer the dark and find some of Texas’ hidden treasures.
Back in the 20th Century, the Mayfield family began ranching in Sonora, Texas and soon discovered that there was a large opening that lead to a fifty-foot drop and an even bigger cavern under their land. After local cavers had the chance to explore and discover some of the hidden passages with strange formations and beauty never before seen, the Caverns of Sonora was born.
With the vision to develop the caverns and preserve it for future generations, it was officially opened in July of 1960 and has been a very popular destination for cavers, thrill seekers, and explores alike.
When visitors come to the Caverns, they have the opportunity to see up close and personal what a living cave is all about. Take the Crystal Palace Tour and go 155 feet below the surface through two miles of decorated cave passages or take a customized group tour with your family and friends. Stop by the Underground Classroom and learn about geology, cave biology, and paleontology right where it all happens.
But wait the Caverns of Sonora are not the only cool thing around the area! Keep exploring at San Angelo, Texas. Just an hour away from the Caverns you’ll be able to find the International Waterlily Collection at Civic League Park. Take a break and treat yourself to a cold homemade root beer and some traditional fudge at Eggemeyer’s General Store. Barley and Board, Denton’s first brewpub, quickly caught our attention and that of the locals with their authentically styled pub and restaurant, located on the historic Downtown Square. Incorporating Denton’s history in the pub, their building’s brick walls from the 1925 Texas Building are proudly displayed, while the atmosphere is laced with rooted industrial era style in their reclaimed wood bars and tables, distressed leathers, and metal light fixtures. Their menu was created by Executive Chef Chad Kelley, former chef for Meddlesome Moth, which offers “New American Cuisine,” and an array of small and large plates reflecting the style and taste of the pub. With over 30 beers on tap, including in-house brews, as well as crafted cocktails and wines, there is always something new to satisfy your craving for adventure. Read more…
