Famous Texas Ranches and the Stores They Created
Cattle, horses, and oil is what you can expect to find at the historic 6666 Ranch. Since its humble beginnings in 1868, this ranch is still a must-see for Texans and tourists alike. The ranch now spans 275,000 acres of Texas prairie—to understand just how much land that is, you could fit Washington D.C. in there and still have 245,000 acres left over. While the ranch originally made it big on cattle and horses, it was the discovery of oil on the property that sky-rocketed it into the empire it is today. 6666 Ranch has produced prize-winning livestock and is famous all over the world.

Rancher Captain Samuel Burk Burnett started this “convenience store” at the 6666 Ranch in 1990 so that cowboys would have access to everyday goods and a few luxury items. 31 years later, this store still stands in the same building located in the center of the ranching community selling the same practical staples and now all the ranch-tested tools, hats, decor, branded gear and snacks a West Texan could dream of!

King Ranch’s beautiful line of leather goods was created to withstand the harsh conditions of the South Texas Rangelands. King Ranch needed saddles that were durable, yet lightweight, comfortable to ride and easy on the horses’ backs. He was unable to find such gear, so he hired craftsmen who could make them, and he soon started his own saddlery. Since then, King Ranch Saddle Shop (located at the historic King Ranch) has become synonymous with beautiful, quality ranching supplies.
