With so many self-starters in Texas, no one is all that surprised that our craft beer scene has expanded with a vengeance. Most cities are—wisely—getting in on all of the hoppy action, and we’ve got a list of the best brewpubs and breweries in the state to get you started. We can guarantee that the bubbly libations flowing from the taps at any of these Texas brewpubs and microbreweries are unique, made in Texas and most certainly tasty. Bottoms up!
Allen – Nine-Band Brewing
Texas-born and-raised, the Nine-Band brewmasters provide an award-winning experience with their handcrafted styles. It’s worth the trip, so go straight to the source and enjoy a cold Toad Choker Barley Wine or a Hoop Snake Hefeweizen with the brewmasters themselves at the Nine-Band headquarters.
Austin – 512 Brewing Company
512 Brewing Company is one of the few breweries in Texas where you will find local and organic products used in most of the beers. The environmentally-conscious brewery features predominantly IPA’s, offering 10 different ones among their other beers. If you are in the Austin area, don’t forget to stop in here for a cold one!
Austin – North by Northwest Restaurant & Brewery
Immediately recognizable by its fully-functioning silo full of 25,000 lbs. of barley, North by Northwest has over thirty years of brewing experience. In addition to a variety of tasty German-style brews, North by Northwest offers Beer School for those less-versed in the art of beer.
Blanco – Real Ale Brewing Company
Located in the rolling Hill Country just outside of Austin is one of Texas’ hidden treasures when it comes to breweries. Real Ale Brewing Company started in 1996, staying exclusive to Texas ever since. This brewery is perfect if you want to take a short trip into the Hill Country and what better way to enjoy the scenery than with a hand-crafted beer?
Boerne – Cibolo Creek Brewing
Family-owned Cibolo Creek Brewing Co. proudly serves Boerne, Texas natives and travelers alike. Try their small and large batch brewed beer by starting with their crowd favorite, the “Boerne Blonde”, while enjoying a meal that’s locally sourced from places all over the Lone Star state.
Boerne – The Dodging Duck Brewhaus
Set against the backdrop of the beautiful Texas Hill Country, The Dodging Duck Brewhaus has multiple awards to back up their brewing prowess—three gold and three silver medals from The World Beer Championships to be exact! Try: Sir Francis Drake Porter and the Fowl Play IPA.
Dallas – Deep Ellum Brewing Co.
Experience Deep Ellum at Deep Ellum Brewing Co., with a name that represents more than just the brewery you are sure to get a one-of-a-kind experience. They pride themselves on their ‘Beerfesto’, a pledge to never serve a single glass of bad beer, making them one of Texas’ finest.
Dallas – Texas Ale Project
Family and veteran-owned Texas Ale Project is a brewery located in the heart of Dallas. Not only is it a fun place to hang out with the family on weekends, but they offer seasonal beers and free tours on Saturdays at 2! Don’t forget to bring your dog along (on a leash) so he can enjoy the nice evenings with you on their patio.
Fredericksburg – Fredericksburg Brewing Company
Located in a city rife with German history, it makes sense that Fredericksburg Brewing Company is the oldest brewpub in the Lone Star State. The on-site Bed & Brew is perfect for when you feel like thoroughly enjoying the restaurant’s craft offerings. Bonus: Sidewalk consumption is allowed here, so you can enjoy their cold brews on your sidewalk strolls.
Granbury – Revolver Brewing
Revolver Brewing was founded by Ron and Rhett Kiesler, father and son, alongside Grant Wood Master Brewer and Cicerone. Wood has helped craft brews all over the nation, most notably at Pearl Brewery and a little place up north called Sam Adams. Their core beers, Blood & Honey American Ale, Long-Range Pils, Full-Tang IPA and Hop Device IPA, are available at a number of restaurants and bars across Texas.
Grapevine – Hop & Sting Brewery
Located in a city mostly known for wine, Hop & Sting Brewery, formerly known as Grapevine on Tap, stands out! Creating high quality, small batch, craft ales and lagers, that are produced on the basis of education, experience, discipline, and attention to detail. Speaking of attention to detail, they received a gold medal in the 2018 Brewdies Beer Packaging Awards for their fun can designs. Bonus: Their fun designs ensure you pass them by when shopping at your local Whole Foods, Spec’s, Total Wine or Craft Beer stores.
Grapevine – Uncle Buck’s Brewery & Steakhouse
A member of the Bass Pro Shops Restaurant Family, they might as well have named Uncle Buck’s Brewery & Steakhouse “your husband’s favorite restaurant.” Hoppy microbrews and steak is a classic combo, and it’s always on the menu at Uncle Buck’s. They also have the capacity to host you and 399 of closest friends or co-workers the next time you’re in need of a fun event space.
Houston – Buffalo Bayou Brewing Co.
The Buffalo Bayou Brewing Co. in Houston is a brewery like none other specializing in nontraditional and limited brews. With more than 70 different brews created in the past seven years, it’s no wonder that Buffalo Bayou is in high demand. Due to this high demand they have started building a 3-story, 28,000 sq-ft brewery that will be known as Brewtopia. This new site is set to come later this summer and the excitement continues to grow as the building continues.
Houston – Galveston Island Brewing
Galveston Island Brewing sets itself apart by more than just its beer. With cool events such as “Yoga at the Brewery,” this company really has its customers in mind. After yoga, be sure to grab one or two of their six of offered year-round, or one of their four seasonal brews. However, if you can’t make it until after work, don’t worry because they are open until 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and open until midnight on Friday and Saturday!
Houston – Karbach Brewing Company
The second-fastest growing brewery in the U.S. is right here in Houston, Texas! Karbach Brewing Company offers 13 brews year-round and has a selection of seasonal brews and bombers throughout the year to satisfy every taste. If you are a beer enthusiast, be sure to catch one of their 27 tours offered every week! The pub onsite offers a wide range of foods that pair pretty well with beer.
New Braunfels – Faust Hotel & Brewing Company
The brew connoisseurs at Faust Brewing Co. have their craft down pat. In operation since 1998, , stainless steel growlers and even an on-site hotel in historic downtown New Braunfels, could it be any better than that?
Richardson – Four Bullets Brewery
This new and upcoming brewery in Richardson should be on your list of places to visit this weekend. Specializing in fine, hand-crafted ales, you’ll be sure to find one you like. Come and spend your Friday and Saturday afternoons with Four Bullets Brewery!
San Antonio – Alamo Beer Co.
Alamo Beer Co. is probably best known for its Alamo Golden Brew, but that should not shadow the other six brews they offer year-round on tap. This place is perfect for hanging out with friends and family (dogs included) during the beautiful Texas evenings. Also, don’t forget to check out their website for cool upcoming events.
San Antonio – Freetail Brewing Co.
One of the younger brewpubs on our list, Freetail Brewing Co. has already made an impact on the brewing scene since its inception in 2006. As of 2019, Freetail now offers five core beers—Bat Outta Helles, Freetail Original, Rye Wit, Soul Doubt IPA and San Antonio Pale Ale.
The Woodlands – Southern Star
Best known for hosting homebrew competitions and being the first craft brewery in Texas to serve canned beer, Southern Star has a unique way of taking an all but extinct style of beer and creating something new. Come out and attend one of their fun events from trivia to BBQ cook offs, they’ve got it all!
