You know the classics of every Texas Bucket List like The Alamo, the State Capital, or the Bob Bullock Museum. We hope you visited these spots on your 8th grade Texas history tour – definitely not to miss! But we’ve put together a few lesser known Texas icons to add to your Summer adventure list this year!

Jacob’s Well
As the longest underwater cave in Texas and an artesian spring delivering thousands of gallons of water per minute, Jacob’s Well is the perfect spot to cool off and have some summer fun. A little over 81-acres long in Wimberly, Jacob’s Well is a great swimming spot where you can enjoy wildlife and a natural cave. Make sure to make a reservation! Time slots are limited.

Marfa
Looking for small town fun? Marfa is a small desert city in West Texas between the Davis mountains and Big Bend National Park, and was originally founded in the 1880’s as a railroad water stop. Today, it is a tourist destination and a major center for minimalist art with attractions such as the Chinati Foundation, historical architecture, art galleries and displays like the iconic Prada store, and the Marfa “Mystery” Lights. Here you can also stay at the charming and historic Hotel Paisano.

Texas Outdoor Musical
Get ready to sing your heart out at the Texas Outdoor Musical. Produced annually by the Texas Panhandle Heritage Foundation at the outdoor Pioneer Amphitheater in Palo Duro Canyon, you can see seasonal performances about the history of Texas.

Must Visit BBQ Spot – Franklin’s BBQ
What has hundreds of people lining out the door to chow down on the “best BBQ in the country”, you ask? Franklins BBQ in Austin, Texas is a famous barbecue spot, selling out brisket every single day. Aside from serving up a delicious menu of meats and sides, Franklin’s has also been visited by big names like Barack Obama, Gordon Ramsey, Jimmy Kimmel and more!

That’s not all, this BBQ joint has appeared on Anthony Bourdain: No Reservation, and is even featured in the film “Chef”. Talk about iconic! 

World Famous Painted Churches
One of Texas’ hidden treasures is The Painted Churches in Schulenburg. Located in the communities of Dubina, High Hill, Praha, and Ammannsville, these churches were painted by German and Czech immigrants to encapsulate European churches. Here you can see hand-painted sculptures, stained glass windows, and so much rich culture and history! Make sure to visit their website for more information on tour times and events!

The 6666 Ranch
Giddy up on over to the 6666 Ranch in King County, Texas as well as Carson County and Hutchinson County. Founded in 1870, the Four Sixes Ranch is part of the famous Burnett Ranches LLC, and one of the largest ranches in Texas. Encompassing over 260,000 acres, this legendary cattle ranch is among the most storied family-run businesses in Texas history, and was even featured on the popular television series “Yellowstone.”

Sam Houston Monument
If you’re a history buff, this quick trip is for you! Just off of Interstate 45 in Huntsville, Texas standing tall and mighty is the Sam Houston statue, or officially named “A Tribute to Courage”. Known as the tallest statue in the world, standing 67 feet, this landmark recognizing American hero and founding father of Texas Sam Houston should be added to your road trip map.

While in Huntsville, you can also visit the Texas Prison Museum, where you can check out “Old Sparky” the electric chair. Find more info here!

Throw Back a Chilton in Lubbock
A cousin to Ranch Water, this “unofficial” drink of West Texas was supposedly invented by a bartender at Lubbock Country Club. This drink of choice in Lubbock and a favorite of Red Raiders will make you an official Texan. Find the recipe here.

Floating the Guadalupe
Grab your innertube and float down the Guadalupe river – the most popular river to float in Texas. This river is 230 miles long and runs from central Texas to the Gulf of Mexico. With relaxed waters and hot summer temperatures, there is no better way to spend your summer than with this popular outdoor activity.

Cool Thursdays at the Dallas Arboretum
Calling all music lovers! Cool Thursdays at the Dallas Arboretum are happening now! Here you can enjoy an amazing view of the sunset over White Rock Lake, all while enjoying sweet tunes by bands from all over the country. You’ll want to make this your Thursday night routine because now, the dance floor is open! Make sure to get your tickets soon, and even pre-order concert charcuterie for pickup!

Gruene Hall
Two-step on over to the oldest and continually operating Texas dance hall that is Gruene Hall. Built in 1878, this 6,000 square-foot hall hosts live country, Americana and blues musicians nightly, and has had performances by legends like Garth Brooks, Willie Nelson, George Strait and many more.

Big Bend National Park
If you’re in need of an outdoor adventure, Big Bend National Park is just the place. Located deep in southwest Texas, this park extends over 100 miles along the Mexican Border with a large array of ecosystems, including a desert, river and mountain region. There are more than 150 miles of hiking trails, scenic drives, river activities, horseback riding, and so much more to choose from!

Congress Avenue Bridge Bats
One of the most unique experiences we recommend checking out is the bats under the Congress Avenue Bridge in Austin. This colony consists of 500,000 to 1.5 million Brazilian free-tailed bats. These bats roost and rear their young in the massive concrete beams underneath the bridge. Some of the best viewing opportunities for the bats include visiting in late July continuing through August.
