“That? Oh, don’t worry—it’s just a tortilla.”

This is the dialogue often overheard from unsuspecting visitors to the Waco Suspension Bridge, home of the tortilla toss. While the bridge is ideal for romantic walks and breathtaking views of the city, it’s also the designated place for disposing of tortillas for sport. Let us explain. The iconic bridge, built in 1870, is flanked by two parks that provide an ideal lush, green background for many of the city’s festivals and events. Additionally, the bridge is within walking distance of Ninfa’s Tex-Mex restaurant. Wacoans have lovingly created a game that consists of tossing tortillas from the bridge, Frisbee-style, in an attempt to hit a concrete pillar stationed a few yards away in the Brazos River.
