Weekend Getaways
Coastal Plains
Do you want to see beaches over break? Padre Island will help you escape the chaos of school. The island is located along the Gulf of Mexico’s southern coast, recorded as the longest barrier island. You can admire the white sand and the sunsets that will leave you speechless. If your wallet is broke and you don’t have lawn chairs, bring a few towels to rest on while you relax on the shore and spot sea turtles!
If money is a way to go, find a tour to be a part of like horseback riding along the shore!
Great Plains
Looking for a quirky stop off of Route 66? Cadillac Ranch is an art exhibit located right outside of Amarillo, and comprised of ten half-buried and graffitied Cadillacs. Take a can of spray paint to make your mark and take a spunky photo to post to Instagram! After stopping here, your belly may be empty, so head over to 575 Pizzeria in Amarillo to experience an environment with gourmet pies in a stylish setting.
Mountains and Basins Region
Taking a short trip to Big Bend National Park? Big Bend consists of three ecosystems, which definitely take a lot of time to explore it, but it can be done in a two-day period. The park offers camping and lodging options. The first day, you will want to get an early start to be sure to hike the canyon and the Chisos Mountains, following the Lost Mine Trail of 4.8 miles. Nighttime is beautiful here, where you can see every star light up the sky, as there are no city lights to take away from the beauty. Your second day can consist of a six-mile hike to lead you to the hot springs for a dip.
Central Plains
Austin is full of hipster and trendy places to visit with a multitude of murals to serve as photo ops in the city. The murals are surrounded by local hotspots and can be found in a mural list on Pinterest. If looking for more of a nature experience, Lady Bird Lake offers hiking and biking trails plus paddling, fishing, and rowing.
